The Journal of Balanced Reading Instruction (subscription, pdf) is a professional, refereed journal published by the Balanced Reading Instruction Special Interest Group (membership form, pdf) of the International Reading Association. The journal is published annually as a service to those interested in strengthening the teaching and learning of literacy for all learners, including learners for whom English is not a native language. The journal's mission is to improve the quality of literacy instruction, research, and scholarship and to disseminate the results of this work to the literacy education community.

The views expressed by contributors to Balanced Reading Instruction do not necessarily reflect those of the editors, the Editorial Advisory Board, (pdf) the BRI SIG or its members. In addition, its content (pdf) should not be construed to have the endorsement of the International Reading Association or its officers and members

 

Call for Papers

The Journal of Balanced Reading Instruction (BRI) invites submissions of previously unpublished articles on topics of significance to those concerned with the improvement of reading and writing instruction for all learners, including those for whom English is a second or foreign language. We are particularly interested in manuscripts that bridge the gap between literacy theory and practice and address current literacy research issues such as professional development for literacy teachers, the integration of literacy across the disciplines, teacher preparation, best practices in literacy research and instruction, improving the teaching of reading for English language learners, integration of technology in literacy instruction, and related issues.

Please submit 2 electronic copies, either on disk or in an e-mail attachment, 1 with author(s) information, cover letter, and title page, and 1 for review with authors information removed.

Manuscripts, including the abstract (120 words or less), and any figures, drawings, and tables should ideally not exceed 25 pages. All submissions to the journal should conform to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition). Please send manuscripts to:
